Changing Gears

What are the best poker online strategies? Some experts say tight aggressive poker play works best while others extol loose aggressive tactics. In reality, no one poker strategy works all the time. Poker is a situational game with lots of variables that force you to adjust your game from table to table, and even over shorter intervals at one table.
Tournament play compels you to be aggressive to keep ahead of the escalating blinds. You can’t be a tight rock or a betting maniac throughout a tournament. Either way you will lose your chip stack. You also can’t take anything for granted. Just because there is a loose maniac behind you, you can’t rely on the maniac to make your check raise attempt successful. You must get a read on your opponents’ styles and adapt your play to them. You also need to make some moves contrary to the image you’ve established in order to confound the other players trying to get a read on you.
If you always play by the books and in the same style, you will be too easy to read, especially if you go against the same players on a regular basis. Figure out ways to add new tricks to your repertoire. If you are an aggressive player, then slow play occasionally too. If you attempt a lot of check raising, then sometimes let your check stand and only call a bet behind you or fold. Being able to change gears is an essential poker skill.
