Sydney Botulinum medicine (BoTox for short) is now popular in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming a grooming necessity for many in the city.

Nonetheless I am often dumbfounded by the stories surrounding the procedure. Here I have outlines a few of the myths which I come across everyday in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a doctor.

Mistaken Belief # 1: I could lose my facial expressions!

Research has found there are 60 or so muscles under the skin of your face. They normally work in harmony, but over a period of time lines or wrinkles may form. Too great a dose of BoTox have the effect of the muscles of the forehead appearing less taut. By and large physicians use relatively minute dosages to make you look less tired, but still you will maintain your normal expression.

So by employing a carefully calculated amount of the BoTox in precisely the right muscles one should get a reduction in the wrinkles without reducing facial expression.

Mistaken Belief # 2: BoTox is a poison!
There is a little truth in this argument. Its medical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In large doses it may result in loss of muscle tone or may make one very ill.

However to put everything into perspective: an old chemist’s expression states that ‘everything is poisonous – it all depends on the dose’. Every drug can make an individual very sick in large enough doses. Water can be fatal if you take too much.

Mistaken Belief # 3: BoTox injections will be painful!
The needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter smaller than a human hair. Several people have equated the shots to a mosquito bite. It for certain is less traumatic than a procedure like a vaccination.

Mistaken Belief # 4: My face will feel numb!
This is completely false. BoTox works on the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax muscles is affected by BoTox.

Mistaken Belief # 5. Once you start BoTox you must keep going otherwise you may wrinkle faster than before!
Also wrong.

The first set of injections will last about three months. Subsequent treatments do last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again – the wrinkles will slowly reform. However they will not be worse than before the treatment.

Even if you never have BoTox ever again – those lines will in all likelihood be a little less noticeable than if you had not undergone the treatment. Primarily due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a rest during the therapy.
